Assessment centres for promotion
Situation
Assessment centres were in situ at the NSW Police Force for three promotional positions - Administrative Officers, Middle Managers and Senior Managers - but many of the tasks lacked face validity.
We were asked to review and then replace the tasks that were being used with completely new tasks. The new tasks needed to be based upon policing situations and the client required candidate notes, role player notes where applicable and assessor notes for each exercise, including behavioural indicators to indicate levels of performance.
Solution
We authored a large number of highly realistic tasks which were developed in close consultation with the Police Force. These included parallel forms to avoid exercises suffering from over exposure given the number of repeat occasions they would be used throughout the year.
We also went on to develop video examples of administration of exercises for the training of Police Force administrators.
Outcome
Development of such a large number of new tasks over short time frames was a considerable achievement and the client commented that they were a substantial improvement on what had been used previously.
All of our new tasks were subsequently implemented by the NSW Police Force.
